Example Play: Set-up
Randomly place the land hexes in rings (here, image 1, 2 rings are shown for the example play, however 4 are used in the game). Once placed, if any species do not have viable habitats (here the Blue Whale requires 2 linked oceans), move the nearest required land to make a viable habitat (image 2). Place all of the Species tokens on their respective numbers (image 3).

Place all of the Resource tokens in the resource bank. Place the Cost of Land token at '0', this will be reset after the players choose their starting land locations, before the first turn.
|
Randomly place the Upgrade tokens in the Upgrade Exploited Lands chart. Place the Species Saved token at '0' on the Species Saved chart, and the Species Extinct token at '0' on the Species Extinct chart.

Example Play: Starting Lands
Once the player order has been set, the first person to play (Player 1, Red) will choose their land first. The last person to play will get the End of Round marker (Player 2, Blue).
Red first chooses to exploit a mountain by flipping the land into a mine. They place their player token over the Tier 1 spot. They receive a Mining Resource token (image 2).
Blue then chooses to exploit a forest, but instead of a lumberyard (image 3) they choose to build a city, placing a City token over the lumber image on the hex, and their player token over the Tier 1 spot. They receive a Human Resource token (image 4).
Once the starting lands are chosen set the Cost of Land by moving the Cost of Land token to the corresponding number (equal to the number of exploited lands, here it will be 2), shuffle the Resource cards and reveal the first three cards set into three piles.
Example Play: Round 1
Player 1 (Red) goes first. Red sells the Mining Resource for $9. Then buys land for $2, choosing to exploit the unoccupied Ocean for oil. Red receives an Oil Resource, places the Player token on the Tier 1 space, and receives a Waste token for exploiting the land. However, the Blue Whale requires both oceans to survive, so this will cause its extinction. Red takes the Blue Whale Species token and the Species Extinct token is moved to '1'.
Red then flips the Mining Resource card, using the Red Mine, receiving 2 Mining Resource tokens (1 for flipping the card, and 1 for owning the Tier 1 land used). Red then upgrades the Oil Rig to Tier 2 using the required resources according to the Upgrade Exploited Lands chart (1 Mining resource and 1 Oil resource token), and receives 1 Oil Resource token for upgrading the Oil Rig.
Red then ends turn, paying $1 in Waste dues. A new Resource Card is placed over the flipped card to refresh the 3 Resource Card piles.
Red then ends turn, paying $1 in Waste dues. A new Resource Card is placed over the flipped card to refresh the 3 Resource Card piles.
Player 2 (Blue) then plays. Blue sells the Human Resource for $9. Blue then flips the Human Resource Card, using the Blue City, receiving 2 Human Resource tokens (1 for flipping the card, and 1 for owning the Tier 1 land used). Blue then upgrades the City to tier 2 using the 2 required Human resource tokens. Blue moves the Blue Player token to Tier 2 and receives a Human Resource token.
Blue sells the Human Resource token for $9. Blue then buys and exploits the remaining Ocean land for $2, and instead of an Oil Rig, builds a Recycling Plant. Blue receives a Waste token for exploiting the land.
Blue then ends turn, removing 1 Waste token using the owned Recycling Plant, and so paying no Waste dues. A new Resource Card is placed over the flipped card.
The Round ends.
The Cost of Land is adjusted to 4 (equal to the number of exploited lands). The End of Round marker is rotated anti-clockwise, to Red. Blue will begin the next round.
Example Play: Round 2
Blue begins the second round by flipping the Forest Resource card. Blue receives 1 Lumber Resource token (1 for flipping the card) and 1 Waste token (for flipping a Resource Card not exploited on the board). Blue then buys a Mining Resource token from Red for $10 ($1 more than the Resource Bank value). Blue builds a Habitat Bridge using the Lumber Resource token and the Mining Resource token (as shown by the Acts of Conservation Resource Costs), building along the diagonal between Red's lands to link the unclaimed land beyond. Blue then buys and conserves the newly linked land for $4, placing the Blue Player token on the Tier 1 space and saving the Amur Leopard. The Species Saved token is moved to '1'.
Blue flips the Electricity Resource card for a second card. receiving 1 Electricity Resource token (1 for flipping the card) and 2 Waste tokens (1 for flipping a Resource Card not exploited on the board, and 1 for flipping a second Resource Card on the one turn). Blue sells the Electricity Resource token for $9, and then upgrades the Mountain habitat to Tier 2 for $8 (twice the Cost of Land).
Blue then ends turn. 1 Waste is removed by the Recycling Plant, and pays $3 in Waste dues ($1 for the first Waste and $2 for the second Waste). 2 new Resource Cards are drawn over the flipped cards.
Blue then ends turn. 1 Waste is removed by the Recycling Plant, and pays $3 in Waste dues ($1 for the first Waste and $2 for the second Waste). 2 new Resource Cards are drawn over the flipped cards.
Red buys the remaining Forest to conserve it for $4, placing the Red Player token on the Tier 1 space, and saving the Mountain Gorilla. The Species Saved token is moved to '2'. Red sells the Oil Resource token for $9, then upgrades the conserved Forest to Tier 2 for $8 (twice the Cost of Land), moving the Red Player token to the Tier 2 space.
Red then flips the Oil Resource Card using the Red Oil Rig and receives 3 Oil Resource tokens (1 for flipping the card, 2 for owning the Tier 2 land used). Red buys a Mining Resource token from the Resource Bank for $10, receiving a Mining Resource token and a Waste token. Red then performs an Act of Conservation, Relocating the Sumatran Elephant to the Tier 2 Forest for the 2 resource cost of 1 Mining Resource token and 1 Oil Resource token. The Species Saved token is moved to '3'. Red then sells 2 of the Oil Resource tokens for $17 ($8 for the first and $9 for the second).
As all of the species are saved or extinct, the game will end at the end of the round (15 Species Saved, or 6 Species extinct for a full game). Red flips the Human Resource card using Blue's City and receives 1 Human Resource token (for flipping the card), while Blue receives 2 Human Resource tokens (for the Tier 2 City used). Red also receives a Waste token (for flipping a second card in the one turn). Red upgrades the Forest to Tier 3 for $12 (three times the cost of land), moving the Red Player token to the Tier 3 space.
Red then ends turn, giving Blue 1 Human Resource token to get rid of 1 Waste token using Blue's Recycling plant. Red then pays $3 in Waste dues ($1 for the first Waste, $2 for the second Waste). This ends the round, and so ends the game.
Red then ends turn, giving Blue 1 Human Resource token to get rid of 1 Waste token using Blue's Recycling plant. Red then pays $3 in Waste dues ($1 for the first Waste, $2 for the second Waste). This ends the round, and so ends the game.
